Mind maps can be an invaluable tool in the creative thinking process. A mind map is a visual thinking tool, ideal for brainstorming, exploring ideas and presenting information in a uniquely visual way.

Of all our senses, vision is arguably the most important. As our most dominant sense, our visual experience is the main way that we make sense of the world and learn new things. It’s therefore clear why so many of us learn through images. As a visual representation of your thoughts, it makes sense to use mind mapping within our everyday working life as a way of exploring our ideas and even managing our work and tasks.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that mind mapping is a rather dated process. It’s a concept that has been around for decades and is often associated with traditional methods of note-taking and idea generation. With the advancements in technology over the years, the possibilities to expand our thinking power and manage our work more effectively are growing continuously. However, while software enhancements have made mind mapping easier than ever before, the most essential parts of mind mapping remain the same. And it’s these parts which can be the best way to allow your brain to naturally explore the realms of possibilities within each of your ideas.

Amongst all of this technological advancement, mind mapping has stood the test of time. mind mapping in the modern age is all about taking this traditional method of idea generation and integrating it with the tools we use every day to make generating creative and innovative ideas a seamless part of our everyday life.

Your brain is mind mapping every day – you just don’t realise it

Take a moment to think about how your brain works; once you come up with an idea for something, this usually tends to spark off various different trains of thought. A mind map works the same way. When creating a mind map, you begin with a central idea, and then add various branches to each idea to explore different concepts in greater depth. This is essentially what happens inside your brain when you allow your mind to wander; one thought leads to another, which triggers associations in your brain to spark further, interconnected ideas.

Mind maps take what happens inside your brain and turn them into something tangible, utilising a distinct combination of colour, imagery and visual-spacial awareness to excel your imagination and creative thinking skills. For instance, your memory, ability to learn and even problem-solve can all be enhanced through the power of mind mapping.

It’s the first step in the innovation process

Every great business success begins as an idea. That idea can come from one creative spark of inspiration, or even a team of people collaborating their ideas and turning them into reality. In this digital age, it’s becoming ever more difficult to stand out from the crowd, as competitors use new and interesting ways to engage and excite customers.

It’s therefore vital for companies to look for unique experiences that not only grab the attention of their audience, but offer them something that resonates with them. Having innovative thinkers within your team is a huge asset. However, creating a mind map is a great way for you to capture your ideas as soon as they come to you. You can then revisit your mind map when you have more time to explore these ideas in further detail, which may just lead to your next light-bulb moment.

How can mind mapping help improve my day-to-day work?

Mind mapping is essentially idea generation at its core; therefore, it’s something that can be used in a whole range of different situations, from planning your next marketing campaign to presenting your latest report data in an interesting and engaging way.

Creating Mind maps for a work project allows you to keep a record of any creative solutions you may have for a particular section of your work, and break these down using branches to further explore these solutions. You can then keep this bank of ideas to hand whenever you need a new idea to keep your work fresh. It’s common for creative blocks to happen, no matter your field of work. When faced with a challenge, it can be important to take a step back and assess the situation from a different angle. Adding your ideas to a mind map naturally allows your mind to consider a range of possibilities that may otherwise have been left untapped.

Mind mapping is a powerful and unparalleled way to facilitate innovative thinking. Evolve the way you think – you never know where your next great idea will take you.
